ICL Q&A

What is ICL?

The Visian ICL is an artificial lens produced by STAAR Surgical Co. in Lake Forest, California. It’s made of a soft material called collagen copolymer. This biocompatible material permanently corrects your vision and protects against ultraviolet (UV) sunlight.

A surgeon implants the lens between your natural lens and your iris without changing the shape of your cornea. The lenses can be removed if you no longer wish to have them.

Atlantic Eye Consultants provides comprehensive ICL services for adults. The team performs comprehensive eye exams to determine if you’re a candidate for ICL surgery.

What conditions can ICL treat?

ICL surgery could be a treatment choice for patients with poor eyesight resulting from refractive errors like astigmatism and/or nearsightedness (myopia).

Physical symptoms of a refractive error include:

  • Double vision
  • Blurry vision
  • Headaches
  • Eye pain
  • Squinting

Schedule a diagnostic evaluation at Atlantic Eye Consultations if you have any of these symptoms. The providers use advanced technology to assess your eye health and visual acuity and determine whether eyeglasses, contact lenses, or ICL surgery are right for you.

Adults 21-45 and in good health are typically ideal candidates for the ICL procedure.

What can I expect during ICL surgery?

Atlantic Eye Consultants offers ICL surgery on an outpatient basis, so you can expect to go home soon after your treatment.

The team uses numbing drops in your eye to keep you comfortable. Your provider then makes a tiny opening in your eye to insert the lens. This procedure usually takes about 15 minutes and doesn’t require stitches or a long recovery.

Many people notice an immediate and significant improvement in their vision following ICL surgery. However, you might not notice the full results for up to 24 hours.

The team can prescribe eye drops that you use for a few weeks to prevent infection and keep your eyes clear.  You’ll also need to schedule a follow-up visit to ensure that your ICL surgery is successful and that you can see clearly during the day and at night.
